Hempcrete Workshop, Ashland OR

Take part in the hempcrete wall construction of a uniquely envisioned building in Ashland, Oregon – the first of its kind permitted in Jackson County. The project we will be working on is a 3800 square foot timberframe structure designed as a combined residence, office, and community gathering space. The structure features a central nonagon with a double reciprocal roof, forming a nine-pointed star terminating in a 30’ high cupola. The entire exterior wall is 12” thick formed-in-place hempcrete walls, filled in our October workshop. Beyond being an example of sustainable building techniques, the project is an expression of the joy and passion of its creators, and an attempt to inspire the design and integration of more healthy, sacred, and sustainable spaces into our built environment.

During this upcoming five-day course we will provide a wealth of information and a comprehensive understanding of the various hemp-lime building systems currently available. For the experiential part of the workshop we will be focusing on installing hempcrete in the interior walls and dropped ceilings of a 3500SF residence and community gathering space. In addition to this we will have mock-up walls ready to demonstrate the exterior wall framing systems that are typically used in hemp-lime construction. This will give you the opportunity to get your hands on most of the primary framing systems used for formed-in-place hempcrete. For the conceptual training we will focus on an overview of the history of hemp and lime, the benefits and challenges of hemp-lime based construction systems, and how it compares to other natural wall systems. We will also do a deep dive into the architectural design and detailing for hempcrete and detail what it takes to execute a hempcrete build at scale. In addition to the training we are able to provide contacts for suppliers, designers, engineers, and builders who are looking to expand in this field. And most important of all you will have the opportunity to meet other like-minded folks looking to find more harmonious ways to build. We very much look forward to providing the best training available for hemp-lime construction, answering your questions, and supporting you in achieving your goals.
