Hemp stands out as a superior material due to its strength, lightweight nature, carbon negativity, and sustainability. Its use in construction can significantly reduce the environmental damage caused by traditional materials like fiberglass. Additionally, a hemp/lime mix can simplify renovation cleanups by replacing problematic materials that contribute to landfill issues and mold growth. With ongoing research and development, we can enhance and replace many conventional construction methods, paving the way for a better future.

What was a win for your company in the past year? Our major achievement this past year has been refining our proprietary process to micronize hemp down to 36 microns. This breakthrough opens doors to applications in 3D printing, bioplastics, and other sectors that our competitors cannot easily access. We are thrilled about these advancements and their potential to elevate the hemp industry into advanced manufacturing.

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago? We recently discovered that hemp burns hotter and lasts longer than wood, presenting an alternative to both wood and coal. Initially focused on the hemp/lime mix as a concrete substitute, we are now exploring its potential as a fuel source due to its high calorific value and low moisture content. This revelation calls for further research, but the implications are promising.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome?

1. Unscrupulous Players: As the industry expands, opportunists may enter for the wrong reasons, compromising quality. To advance, we need to enhance our research, safety, education, and establish standardized practices to ensure a reliable alternative to synthetic materials.

2. Public Perception: Misinformation about hemp still lingers, often leading to jokes that undermine its industrial potential. The industry must clarify that we focus on industrial hemp fiber, not recreational use, to improve our image and facilitate acceptance in banking and other sectors.

3. Price, Profitability, and Availability: The cost of hemp products can hinder profitability when competing with mainstream materials. Balancing pricing with the long-term benefits of hemp, such as moisture regulation and fire resistance, is essential. Educating consumers on these advantages can help justify a higher price point for a superior product.
