Hemp Voices: Phelan Dalton, The Hemp Building Company

Phelan Dalton is CEO of Colorado-based The Hemp Building Company in charge of project management, material distribution and client consultations.

I am intrigued by hemp-lime's versatility in building, its forgiving nature, and easy repairability. We build homes in harsh climates above 5000' elevation and fire-danger zones. Our clients report that their homes' performance exceeds expectations. And so I continue to be fascinated by hemp-lime's thermal and hygroscopic capabilities.

What was a win for your company in the past year?

Our company worked on more projects than ever before including consulting, supplying materials and installing hemp-lime on several projects. This year, I also dialed in my plastering skills.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?

I believe the industry is experiencing growing pains because new folks entering the industry need to learn more about best practices in hemp-lime installation. In particular, builders need to respect the materials’ drying and cure times when wet casting, and factor those timelines into installation. The industry also needs consistent sources of high-quality building-grade hemp that has been properly processed and stored to avoid mold problems.
