Looking toward the future:
Some developments that make 2025 look promising for hemp building materials and construction:
Certification in US Building Codes: - Hemp+lime (hempcrete) was approved as infill wall material in the US International Residential Code Appendix. This opens the door and cuts red tape for hempcrete builders across the country to work with local building and permitting officials.
Hempcrete shows up in popular culture with Patagonia's Workwear film, Green Buffalo about the Lower Sioux tribe’s hemp building team.
Larger and more important projects, like the tip-up panel multi unit duplexes at Hillside Center for Sustainability featured on our front cover, are being built with hempcrete.
Fire-resistant hemp building materials are increasingly the answer to climate extremes and natural disasters. Fire tests for ASTM E119 and E83 have shown that hemp-lime can withstand ignition – giving us the tools we need for fire resistant homes.
Decarbonization a focus - Global focus on reducing embodied carbon in the built environment puts the spotlight on bio-based building materials like hempcrete, hemp batt insulation and hemp OSB.
We are excited for the future of hemp building and construction, and we think you will be too.
