Also included are informative articles and interviews with some of the most up and coming players in the hemp building industry.

Looking toward the future:

Some developments that make 2024 look promising for hemp building materials and construction:

  • Certification in US Building Codes: - Hemp+lime (hempcrete)  has been approved as infill wall material in the US International Residential Code Appendix. This will open the doors and cut red tape for hempcrete builders across the country to work with local building and permitting officials.

  • Commercial Guide Spec - Commercial architects specifying hemp-lime will find a free resource from US Hemp Building Association to specify hemp in bid documents. This will remove barriers for large commercial hemp projects.

  • US Hemp processors coming on line - More companies are building the supply chain with help from ASTM to build a reliable, consistent building grade hurd supply.

  • Fire-resistant hemp building materials are increasingly the answer to climate extremes and natural disasters. Fire tests for ASTM E119 and E83 have shown that hemp-lime can withstand ignition – giving us the tools we need for fire resistant homes.

  • Decarbonization a focus - Global focus on reducing embodied carbon in the built environment puts the spotlight on hemp building materials, from hempcrete to hemp batt insulation to hemp OSB. Grants and guidelines for embodied carbon are making hemp and other natural building materials the clear choice for sustainability.

We are excited for the future of hemp building and construction, and we think you will be too.
