Trade Association Board Election Candidates Announced

The USHBA announced that 10 members had flung their hats into the ring to run for the board of directors in the December 2024 elections. Complete candidate statements are published on the USHBA 2024 Board Elections Page. To vote for board members, you must be a USHBA paid member in good standing. Paid members receive a digital ballot Dec. 1 via email. Voting ends Dec. 15 and results will be announced via the USHBA newsletter. New board members will be sworn in to the board at the first monthly meeting January 8, 2025.

President
Running for the president role, a 2-year term, are Alex Sexsmith, AIA of Tucson, AZ and Ashley Stallworth of Washington State. Sexsmith currently serves on the board as an at-large member.
“I think my personal experience dealing with black mold and my professional Architectural experience make me a strong candidate to help strengthen and lead the organization,” Sexsmith said in a candidate statement.
“My goal is to bring diversity, business prowess and project activations,” Stallworth said in a candidate statement.

Vice President
Two candidates are running for the vice president role, which is a one-year term; They are Tai Olson, of US Heritage, Franklin Park, IL and Amanda Martin-Behrendtsen of Ojai, CA. Olson currently serves on the board as an at-large member.
“I want to help with the continued development of technical and educational programs to boost the acceptance of hempcrete in the larger construction industry,” Olson said in a candidate statement.
“I’m already doing so much for this industry, I think it’s time to put my capacity for change onto a larger playing field. I think way more can be done and I have the time and experience to share with the board,” Martin-Behrendtsen’s candidate statement reads.
Treasurer
Running unopposed for treasurer is Dylan Trimarchi of Bishop, CA. “I want to help make the ushba the most effective resource for other builders and everyone involved in the industry,” Tramarchi’s statement said.
Secretary
Two candidates are running for secretary, a one-year term. Incumbant Jean Lotus of Fort Collins, CO is in the contest with Ria (Maria) Maddock of Huntington Beach CA.
“With my experience as a board member, I've discovered it's important for USHBA to show US builders and design professionals that hemp building on a large and significant scale is possible and profitable,” Lotus said in a candidate statement.
“I want to bring my life experince to help further along the hemp build industry,” Maddock said in her candidate statement.
At-Large Members
Three candidates are competing for two seats as an at-large member. Tom Rossmassler of Hatfield, MA; Alex Esher of Dorset VT and Ryan Doherty of St. Louis, MO. Doherty currently serves as vice president.
“It is time to take the USHBA to the next level,” Rossmassler said in a candidate statement. “We need to stabilize and grow the organization and integrate more with complementary organizations as well as the movers and shakers who are leading the natural and decarbonization efforts around the country.”
“I have been a long time and active member of the USHBA since the organizations inception, and feel I can be of unique service in helping achieve the present and future goals moving forward,” Escher’s candidate statement reads.
“[I want to] add value to member benefits and continue to spread awareness and education around hemp building materials,” Doherty said in his candidate statement.
