Hemp Voices: Stephen Clarke, Heavengrown

Stephen Clarke is co-founder of Heavengrown, based in Tulum, Mexico

I am deeply committed to bridging the gap between nature and innovation. At Heavengrown, we take a multidisciplinary approach to empower sustainable industries. Our work integrates consulting, build, design and engineering and for construction, leading not only the creative process but also the physical realization of eco-conscious buildings. Beyond construction, we provide consulting services across agriculture, material processing, and the utilization of hemp fiber and other natural materials, such as sugarcane, coconut, and agave. These efforts are grounded in rigorous research on natural materials, enabling us to develop cutting-edge solutions based on the unique properties of these fibers.

One of the most fascinating aspects of hemp is its sheer versatility—it offers humanity an unparalleled opportunity to create a self-sustaining lifestyle. Imagine a single plant that can provide the essentials of life: shelter, nourishment, clothing, energy, medicine, and even materials for water filtration systems. Hemp is more than just a resource; it embodies a sacred balance between spirituality and science, seamlessly addressing practical needs while inspiring profound respect for the natural world. It is a plant that teaches us the beauty of holistic living and interconnectedness.

Our journey has also led us to explore other natural fibers, expanding our work across borders. For example, we've seen incredible success in scaling the use of biocretes—materials derived from plant fibers mixed with mineral binders—into international markets. This has been a crucial step in demonstrating the viability of natural materials in modern construction while fostering localized production and innovation.

One of the most thrilling developments we’ve encountered is the rise of innovations in fiber processing and applications. Technologies like micronized hurd and hemp rebar are transforming the way we think about material properties, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with biobased solutions. These advancements are opening doors to new applications in industries ranging from construction to manufacturing, offering a glimpse of a future where sustainability and performance coexist seamlessly.

Despite the progress, the hemp industry faces some significant challenges. Cost competitiveness and material availability remain hurdles, especially for large-scale industrial sectors. Additionally, manufacturing processes must evolve to meet current ASTM standards or equivalent in various applications to gain widespread acceptance. Overcoming these barriers requires collaborative effort, continued innovation, and policy support, but we are optimistic about the path forward.

At Heavengrown, we believe in the profound potential of natural materials to reshape industries and lives. Through science, design, and a deep respect for the natural world, we are committed to leading this transformation—one fiber, one building, one solution at a time. Together, we can cultivate a future where the balance between humanity and the environment is restored and celebrated.
