Hemp Voices: Taylus Schley, High Desert Hemp Homes

Taylus Schley is co-owner with his brother Ryan of High Desert Hemp Homes, based in Salida, CO

What interests us most is the sustainability of building with hemp as well as the energy efficiency and overall superiority of the product.

What was a win for your company in the past year?

We have seen a growing interest in building with hemp in our local Chaffee county, CO and surrounding areas.

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago?

It has been great to see cast in place hemp-lime construction exceed all of the newer 2021 IECC energy codes that were adopted in our county. We also found that our hemp-lime builds are cost competitive when compared to conventional building methods that use materials with a high carbon footprint to achieve their efficiency.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome?

I think the hemp building industry faces a general lack of education around hemp itself as a building material. We must bridge the gap showing how it is not just a fringe natural building material but also outperforms conventional materials in energy efficiency, sustainability, longevity, while supporting healthy living environments.
