Hemp Voices: Brittany McKell, HEMPALTA

I am the General Manager for HEMPALTA. HEMPALTA is an innovative hemp processor, harnessing the immense potential of industrial hemp through the utilization of advanced, state-of-the-art agricultural technology. We produce a diverse range of hemp-based commercial and consumer products for a healthier and more sustainable future.

Hemp is a versatile crop that can be used in a multitude of applications. I find it interesting the hemp building materials can sequester carbon for 100 years and can dramatically reduce the GHG emissions associated with home building and renovation by creating more energy-efficient, non-toxic, and carbon-absorbing homes.

What was a win for your company in the past year? We have partnered with the Hemp Carbon Standard to measure and report carbon sequestration from the hemp plant growth cycle for carbon credits. This program is a win for us, our farmers and the planet because it contributes to climate change mitigation, encourages new farmers to grow hemp and further incentivizes sustainable hemp farming practices.

What is something about hemp building/construction/processing you didn’t know a year ago?How extensive testing is to have a ASTM compliant product.

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?  The “green premium” between the different insulation materials may be a challenge economically, however this challenge can be mitigated with the increased production of hemp-based building materials. More mass production of hemp-based building materials would mean a decrease in COGS and demand for more processors to join the supply chain.
